PAEPCKE PARK
A PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION FOR ASPEN ART WEEK / ASPEN COLORADO
ASPEN ART WEEK // 2018
What began as an intuitive decision became one of the most defining activations of Launch Intention. Invited to experience Aspen Art Week as a guest, the choice was made—last minute—to instead bring the work. With no formal plan, a 25-foot corten steel paper airplane sculpture was transported by flatbed truck into Aspen, marking the project’s first engagement in the region. Through the support of a local designer and community advocate, a temporary permit was secured at Paepcke Park—an iconic central green space positioned along the primary street into town. Installed in this highly visible, high-traffic location, the sculpture was encountered by thousands—drivers, pedestrians, locals, and visitors alike—many experiencing it unexpectedly within an otherwise familiar setting.
The activation unfolded organically over the weekend. A local yoga studio hosted an outdoor class beside the sculpture, centered around intention, while continuous public interaction emerged throughout the park. Conversations, curiosity, and local press coverage followed naturally as the work became part of the town’s daily rhythm—art walks, picnics, and spontaneous gatherings forming around it. What began as a temporary installation quickly evolved into deeper community integration—leading to a placement at a private estate on Red Mountain, a gallery exhibition at Skye Gallery, and a two-year installation of a 25-foot stainless steel sculpture at the Red Brick Center for the Arts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Launch Intention partnered with local media on a community video initiative, maintaining connection during a time of isolation. Collectively, these moments positioned the work as both cultural presence and catalyst—contributing to ongoing conversations and efforts around public art within the Aspen community.
Artist Note
There was no formal roadmap—but there was clarity in the decision to act. Bringing the sculpture to an unfamiliar place, setting it directly in the flow of the town, and trusting the work to meet people where they already were—that was the point.
What followed felt like a direct reflection of the project itself. One intuitive thought, carried into action, opened the door to something much larger—immediate visibility, genuine community engagement, and a seamless sense of welcome. What began as a temporary installation extended into years of presence, relationships, and continued interaction.
It reinforced something fundamental:
when intention is clear and acted upon, it creates its own path forward.
CREDITS & THANK YOU'S
Thank you to the community, collaborators, and supporters who made this installation possible. Each contribution—whether through time, resources, or belief—helped transform an idea into something tangible and shared. This sculpture represents more than a single vision; it reflects a collective intention launched together. May it serve as a space to gather, reflect, and imagine what’s possible when ideas are given the opportunity to take flight.
