50 FT PAPER AIRPLANE INSTALLATION
BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS // 2019
LAUNCH INTENTION // BENTONVILLE, AR
Installed in 2018, this 50-foot Launch Intention sculpture became one of the early large-scale public artworks integrated directly into the daily rhythm of Bentonville, Arkansas. Positioned just off the town square along active streets and bike paths, the monumental paper airplane quickly became part of the landscape—encountered naturally by residents, visitors, cyclists, families, and the broader community moving through the city each day.
The familiar symbol, scaled beyond expectation, invited immediate interpretation and interaction. Over time, the sculpture evolved from installation to landmark: a meeting point, way-finding marker, tourist attraction, climbing structure, photo destination, and recognizable piece of the city’s growing cultural identity. Its continued presence reflects the power of accessible public art—work that belongs as much to the people around it as the place itself.
As one of the earlier public installations within what has since become one of the country’s most recognized community art landscapes, the sculpture helped contribute to Bentonville’s expanding investment in public space, creativity, and cultural engagement.
ARTIST NOTE
One of the most meaningful aspects of this installation is how fully the community claimed it as their own. The work was never placed on a pedestal or separated from everyday life—it was embedded directly into movement, routine, and public space. Over the years it has quietly become part of the identity of the city itself, which is exactly what Launch Intention is meant to do: exist openly in the world and allow people to form their own connection to it.
CREDITS & THANK YOU'S
Thank you to the community, collaborators, and supporters who made this installation possible. Each contribution—whether through time, resources, or belief—helped transform an idea into something tangible and shared. This sculpture represents more than a single vision; it reflects a collective intention launched together. May it serve as a space to gather, reflect, and imagine what’s possible when ideas are given the opportunity to take flight.
