25 FT PAPER AIRPLANE INSTALLATION

LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA // 2019

LAUNCH INTENTION // CENTRAL LOS ANGELES

Installed at the center of the Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School campus in Los Angeles, this 25-foot Launch Intention sculpture was created as part of the Branded Arts produced Maya Angelou Mural Festival—an initiative that transformed the school into a living public gallery through large-scale works by internationally recognized mural artists.

Positioned as both sculpture and gathering point, the installation became an active part of campus life. Students participated in a unique Launch Intention activation where they were invited to reflect on their personal goals, dreams, and direction before hand-painting their intentions directly onto the surface of the sculpture itself. Once sealed into the work, these messages became permanently embedded within the structure—creating a collective time capsule of the student body and a daily visual reminder to move intentionally toward what they want to create in their lives.

The project transformed the sculpture from static object into shared expression. What began as a monumental paper airplane became a physical representation of the voices, ambitions, and energy of the students surrounding it each day. The installation continues to serve as a permanent fixture on campus and an ongoing point of reflection for future classes to encounter and interpret in their own way.

The installation also became a powerful example of how creativity integrated directly into the infrastructure of a space can transform the daily experience of those moving through it. Within an educational system built around growth and possibility, the sculpture serves as a continuous reminder that individual expression, imagination, and self-awareness deserve visible space within the environment itself.

LAUNCH INTENTION X MAYA ANGELOU MURAL FESTIVAL

Art, community, and collective vision at Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School
In May 2019, Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School in South Los Angeles was transformed into an open‑air art campus during the Maya Angelou Mural Festival, a week-long project produced by Branded Arts in partnership with LAUSD.

Over two dozen local and international artists came together to paint large-scale murals across the school, turning it into a daily source of inspiration for students and the wider community.

Amid this creative surge, The Launch Intention Foundation, founded by artist Griffin Loop, brought a sculptural experience focused on participation, reflection, and collective vision.

A LIVING SCULPTURE OF IDEAS

Launch Intention contributed its signature large-scale paper airplane sculpture, a visual metaphor for ideas in motion and the power of intention. Installed on campus, the piece operated as a participatory anchor—a place where students, teachers, and visitors could pause, reflect, and actively engage.

Participants were invited to write down their personal intentions—goals, dreams, commitments—and symbolically “launch” them, connecting their inner vision to a shared physical space. This simple act turned the sculpture into a living record of aspiration, echoing the festival’s tribute to Dr. Maya Angelou’s legacy of voice, courage, and self-definition.

STANDING AMONG LOCAL & GLOBAL HEAVYWEIGHTS

One of the powerful aspects of this festival was the mix of globally recognized names and deeply rooted local voices. Branded Arts curated a lineup that included:

  • Internationally known artists such as Shepard Fairey, Faith XLVII, Daniel Arsham, JR’s Inside Out Project, and Axel Void, whose murals brought global art-world energy directly onto the campus walls.
  • Respected local and LA-based artists like Ni Santas, Victoria Cassinova, Enk One, Brushwork, Rob Hill, 1010and others, whose work reflected the cultural landscape and lived reality of South Los Angeles.

Launch Intention’s sculpture existed within this ecosystem of large-scale visual storytelling, adding a three-dimensional, interactive element to a campus already wrapped in powerful imagery. While the murals told stories on the walls, the Launch Intention installation invited students to step into the narrative and contribute their own.

EXTENDING THE FESTIVAL'S VISION OF EMPOWERMENT

The Maya Angelou Mural Festival was not only about aesthetics; it was tied to education, empowerment, and future-focused thinking. Throughout the week, the school hosted an academic symposium with programming from partners like NASA JPL, LACMA, Artsy, and cultural figures such as Darryl “DMC” McDaniels. Students helped artists on murals, discussed themes in class, and interacted with visiting creatives and organizations.
Within this broader framework, Launch Intention aligned naturally:

  • The murals honored identity, resilience, justice, and possibility.
  • The symposium connected students to science, culture, and creative careers.
  • The Launch Intention sculpture gave students a tangible ritual for declaring where they want to go next.

Teachers and staff were able to use the sculpture as a tool for conversations about goal-setting, emotional intelligence, and community support, reinforcing the idea that intention is a powerful first step toward change.

ART AS A PLATFORM FOR COLLECTIVE INTENTION

The festival permanently reimagined the campus as a gallery of large-scale murals by nearly thirty artists, from 1010 to Add Fuel, Ni Santas to Victoria Cassinova, and many more. Each piece contributes to a layered environment where students walk daily through color, story, and symbolism—rather than neutral, blank walls.

Launch Intention’s presence added another dimension: instead of being purely observational, the experience became participatory. Students did not just walk past murals painted by renowned artists; they were invited to contribute their own words, hopes, and commitments to a shared space, reinforcing that they, too, are creators of the future.

For The Launch Intention Foundation, the Maya Angelou Mural Festival was a proof of concept for how large-scale sculpture can function as social infrastructure—a focal point where communities gather, speak their intentions, and begin to move together toward a more intentional future.

ARTIST NOTE:

This installation perfectly represents the larger purpose of Launch Intention. The sculpture itself creates curiosity, but the real impact comes from participation and ownership. By inviting students to physically place their intentions into the work, the project became something much bigger than a public art installation—it became a collective marker of possibility, ambition, and self-expression held directly within the campus itself.

CREDITS & THANK YOU'S

Thank you to the community, collaborators, and supporters who made this installation possible. Each contribution—whether through time, resources, or belief—helped transform an idea into something tangible and shared. This sculpture represents more than a single vision; it reflects a collective intention launched together. May it serve as a space to gather, reflect, and imagine what’s possible when ideas are given the opportunity to take flight.
